MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Common Council and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett honored the 2008 Women's National Invitation Tournament Champion Marquette women's basketball team on Tuesday, April 15, at City Hall. The Milwaukee Common Council and Mayor Barrett recognized the accomplishments of head coach Terri Mitchell, Assistant Coaches Michelle Nason, Cara Consuegra and Jennie Lillis, director of operations Carolyn Kieger and assistant director of operations Jasmine McCullough, and the 2008 WNIT Champions - Jasmine Collins, Krystal Ellis, Paige Fiedorowicz, Janelle Harris, Svetlana Kovalenko, Kelly Lam, Tatiyiana McMorris, Jocelyn Mellen, Erin Monfre, Angel Robinson, Marissa Thrower and Courtney Weibel.
A resolution was read to proclaim April 15, 2008 as Marquette Women's Basketball Day. The team also met with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett as he presented the Golden Eagles with a separate proclamation from the Office of the Mayor. "It is an honor to be here and we really appreciate this in a very special way. It is a privilege to represent Marquette University and the city of Milwaukee on a national stage," said Mitchell of accepting the resolution. "We have a young team so we face many challenges, suffered many disappointments, and we grew as a team. We faced adversity, but when you face adversity you have a choice to make: are you going to be overwhelmed by it or rise above it. This team showed great character and rose above it. They learned from their experiences and from every game we grew stronger and we grew together. The unity and passion they displayed on the court was fun to coach and it was a great way to represent this city and Marquette University. The foundation has been laid. The future is bright and we are going to build upon this championship." |
